RTDs (Resistance Temperature Detectors) are precision, wire-wound resistors with a known temperature resistance characteristic. In operation, the RTD is usually wired into a specific type of circuit (wheatstone bridge). The output of this circuit can be used to drive a meter which has been calibrated in temperature, or to operate a relay to sound an alarm or shut down the motor.
We use flat, molded strip type RTDs that are only .030 inch thick.
The RTDs are installed in the slot portion of form wound motors, and either in the slot (standard) or in the end turns of mush wound motors.
The RTDs used in motor windings are either 10 ohm, 100 ohm or 120 ohm. Each type of RTD has its own particular resistance characteristic. The basic detectors are listed below.
Ohms | Element | # of Leads |
10 ohms at 25° C | Copper Wire | 3 |
100 ohms at 0° C | Platinum Wire | 3 |
120 ohms at 0° C | Nickel Wire | 2* |

Resistance thermometers also called resistance temperature detectors (RTDs), are sensors used to measure temperature by correlating the resistance of the RTD element with temperature. Most RTD elements consist of a length of fine coiled wire wrapped around a ceramic or glass core. The element is usually quite fragile, so it is often placed inside a sheathed probe to protect it. The RTD element is made from a pure material, typically platinum, nickel or copper. The material has a predictable change in resistance as the temperature changes; it is this predictable change that is used to determine temperature. They are slowly replacing the use of thermocouples in many industrial applications below 600 °C due to higher accuracy and repeatability.

RH Series RTD’s are conventional assemblies with platinum RTD element and SPC(Silver Plated Copper) /NPC (Nickel Plated Copper) conductors. These RTD’s are offered in 2/3/4-wire configuration with single/dual elements, enclosed in a SS316 sheath which is terminated into weatherproof die cast aluminium head. Terminals heads are supplied with standard 1/2” BSP (F) single cable entry with a single compression cable gland. The RTD has a non-bendable sheath, hence sheath length above 300 mm is not recommended. This range of sensor is capable of measuring temperature in the range of -50 to 250°C. The sheath is made out of SS316 material which makes it suitable for a wide range of applications such as chemicals, food, pharmaceuticals. The RTD elements are terminated in to nickel plated brass terminals mounted on high purity steatite terminal block.
